What Are the 4 Causes of Tooth Decay and How to Prevent It

Dental disease, cavities, tooth decay—no matter what you’re experiencing, if left untreated they can cause discomfort, pain, and even tooth loss!

Understanding the causes of cavities and tooth decay can help you maintain optimal oral health. In this blog, we’ll explore four common decay causes and tooth decay prevention so you can enjoy a healthy, bright smile.

Cause #1: Bacteria Formation

Did you know that numerous bacteria live in your mouth? While some are beneficial, others can contribute to tooth decay. One such offender is streptococcus mutans, which causes most tooth decay.

That’s because it converts the sugar in your food into lactic acid. That lactic acid eats the enamel on your teeth; once that enamel is gone, the inner layers of your teeth become more vulnerable to damage.

Prevention

Practice good oral hygiene! Brushing your teeth at least twice daily with fluoride toothpaste helps keep bacteria and plaque formation at bay while strengthening tooth enamel. Daily flossing is another excellent way to remove food particles and plaque from between teeth, which a toothbrush can’t reach.

Cause #2: Acidic or Sugary Foods and Drinks

Acidic food or sugary drinks and tooth decay go hand in hand, as they provide a constant food supply that fuels the bacteria in your mouth. Acidic substances can directly erode tooth enamel, while sugars are fermented by bacteria that produce acids.

This constant acid exposure, whether from acidic foods or the acid made from sugar, makes teeth much more susceptible to decay.

Prevention

Limiting your intake of sodas, citrus juices, energy drinks, and sugary snacks can help protect your teeth. A healthy diet for teeth includes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. A balanced diet helps reduce your risk of tooth decay and supports your overall health.

If you consume acidic foods or sugary drinks, rinse your mouth with water when you are finished to help neutralize any acid and wash away food particles. Dental sealants may be recommended if you have an especially hard time keeping your teeth clean after eating.

These protective coatings are applied to the chewing surfaces of back teeth. They help prevent food and bacteria from becoming trapped in teeth grooves or crevices.

Cause #3: Poor Oral Hygiene

Not following a proper dental hygiene routine allows plaque, a sticky film of bacteria, to build up on teeth. Over time, that plaque hardens into tartar, which can only be removed by a dentist.

Both plaque and tartar harbor bacteria that produce the acids that lead to both tooth decay and gum disease.

Prevention

Follow a consistent oral care routine, including brushing with fluoride toothpaste, flossing, and rinsing. When brushing, use a soft-bristled toothbrush and gentle, circular motions to remove plaque effectively without hurting your gums.

It’s also essential to keep up with dentist appointments. Be sure you’re regularly visiting your dentist for professional cleanings and check-ups. To help make oral care accessible to all patients, our orthodontic office accepts a variety of dental insurance providers, most PPO plans, and we offer several financing options.

Cause #4: Dry Mouth

Saliva is critical for maintaining your oral health, as it helps wash away food particles, neutralize acids, and remineralize teeth. Dry mouth, also known as xerostomia, reduces saliva flow. That reduced flow can increase your risk of tooth decay.

Prevention

Before preventing dry mouth, you’ll need to get to the root cause. Several things can lead to developing a dry mouth, including:

  • Medical conditions
  • Medications
  • Lifestyle factors, such as smoking

To help reduce your risk of developing a dry mouth, drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated. Avoid tobacco use, and reduce alcohol consumption as much as possible. Consider chewing sugar-free gum, as that can help stimulate saliva production. If you’re having trouble pinpointing the cause of your dry mouth, ask your orthodontist about it during one of your preventative dental care visits.

Cheese, nuts, and crunchy vegetables can also help boost your saliva production while working to keep teeth clean.
